What is the difference between NEW and "Intelligent Choice" products ?
NEW StorageWorks products from HP are "un-opened box", resold by IPD. They carry the standard HP Warranty. "Intelligent Choice" products are either Unused "open box", Used, or Refurbished product. These products carry a Full 1 Year Warranty, with extended warranty options. All products are 100% guaranteed form, fit and functionally compatible with HP StorageWorks and your desired operating system and are eligible for maintenance. Availability of "Intelligent Choice" StorageWorks products are priced significantly less than New StorageWorks products and are generally more readily available later in a products marketing life cycle.

Your project's budget, performance requirements, and vendor requirements all come into play when making a new versus reconditioned computer hardware decision. The following is a guide to help you consider the positives and negatives of both.

New Intelligent Choice

Points To Consider

Purchase  Price Buyers can save as much as 70% for the same performance when buying refurbished equipment.  You'll find the greatest Total Cost of Ownership savings with "Intelligent Choice".
Retained Value Systems that are 1-3 years old have already depreciated and will tend to retain their remaining value.  High performance systems tend to hold their value longer.
Performance Both New and "Intelligent Choice" products perform to original specifications. Refurbished drives are updated to the latest qualified firmware, whereas, "New" un-opened box drives may be back dated due to sitting in stock channels.
Configuration Options Take advantage of larger hard drives, higher capacity memory and other advanced features available from select "Intelligent Choice" products.
Reliability The reliability of refurbished systems is historically very good.  Reliability can be enhanced by installing current firmware, recommended OS patches, and newer hard disks.  Many reconditioned machines can be pre-certified by the manufacturer prior to shipment.
Software Maintenance Typically software maintenance is available for both new and used from the original manufacturer or a third-party maintenance company.
Warranty Refurbished equipment warranties vary, but all equipment is eligible for vendor maintenance.  Refurbished equipment can be priced with the same manufacturer's warranty period included.
Hardware Maintenance Typically hardware maintenance is available for both New  and "Intelligent Choice" from either the original manufacturer or a third-party maintenance company.
